Student Direction
Student Directed One Acts
Starting in the Fall of 2026, Theatre South will be offering up an opportunity for two students to direct a One Act
Responsibilities
There are a lot of responsibilities that a director will be in charge of handling, so make sure you look over the following list and verify you are up for the challenge!
- Show Selection
- You will need to select a One Act that is appropriate for high schoolers to perform and that you connect with
- Technical Leader
- You will need to communicate what design needs your show has and check in with any designers
- This will include attending all build and paint sessions for your set. In addition, you will need to be present for any light or sound design sessions that require your approval
- Auditions
- You will need to select sides for the auditions, make copies, and highlight them
- You will have auditioners read the sides and start to compile a call back list
- After callbacks, both student directors and Miss Kouma will cast the show
- Run Rehearsals
- Create the rehearsal schedule
- Be prepared ahead of time with blocking annotated in the script margins and plan for how rehearsal should go
- Provide Feedback and Corrections
- You will need to be able to address any bad behavior during rehearsals and provide productive criticism
- DON'T: "You are terrible at portraying someone who is sad"
- DO: "I would like you to try and adding tension to your body and pretend like you are barely holding back tears"
- You will need to be able to address any bad behavior during rehearsals and provide productive criticism
- Manage Budget Distribution
- You will be given a very small budget to use on costumes, set, and props. You will need to decide how much of your budget goes towards each category
- Attend Meetings
- You will need to check in with Miss Kouma regularly
- This time will be for you to ask questions and to make sure everything for the show is on track
